Project Assignment

The task

One of the greatest challenges of the energy transition is integrating renewable energy sources into existing energy systems while creating a more sustainable, reliable and flexible energy supply. Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) enables large quantities of thermal energy to be stored efficiently and flexibly. The storage pits are lined with high-performance geomembranes and use large volumes of water as the thermal storage medium. A floating cover system consisting of a floating liner and insulation layers minimizes heat losses. Together with our partners, we have developed the next generation of sealing systems, designed to achieve service lives of more than 20 years at continuous storage temperatures of up to 95 °C or over 40 years for seasonal operation.

Our sealing concepts take into account environmental conditions, operating scenarios, temperature profiles, and target system lifespans. Whether for seasonal storage, multifunctional storage, or buffer storage, we’ll advise you and develop a customized, comprehensive solution.

Planning and product selection

The primary sealing barrier consists of high-temperature-resistant geomembranes made from PE-HTR or PP-HTR (HTR = High Temperature Resistance). The development of PP-HTR by AGRU Kunststofftechnik has enabled durable geomembrane applications at continuous operating temperatures of up to 95 °C as multifunctional and buffer storage systems. Where additional groundwater or environmental protection is required, for example in groundwater protection areas, a mineral secondary sealing barrier can be integrated into the system. During operation, the entire sealing system can be continuously monitored by a permanently active leak detection and monitoring system.

Implementation

Our DVS-certified installers ensure that these high-performance geomembranes are installed and welded according to the world highest quality standards. Additional protection and monitoring systems can also be designed to meet stringent requirements under the German Water Resources Act (WHG).
Together with our specialist partners, we coordinate the interfaces with other trades and support the overall construction process to ensure efficient workflows and smooth project execution.

Our mineral-based waterproofing material, TRISOPLAST® (LAGA and BAW-approved), has already proven itself in numerous other projects. Thanks to its thin layer thickness of just 8 – 10 cm, it can replace traditional, thicker systems. This results in savings equivalent to thousands of truckloads!
